About Southern Links Golf

Our Story

Southern Links Golf started, fittingly, at a golf tournament. Around 16 years ago, our paths crossed at an event in Queenstown that John was helping to organise. We hit it off straight away—two people who love the game as much for the people and the places as for the golf itself.

Back home in the North Island, we lived roughly two hours apart—Nathan in Pukekohe, John in the Bay of Plenty—but the friendship stuck. Whenever our calendars lined up, we’d meet for a round or enter a tournament together, and the conversation always found its way back to the same thing: how much this country has to offer a travelling golfer.

We come at golf from two different directions. John has spent more than 25 years on the inside of the game, running golf operations at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown and serving as Director of Golf at Tauranga Golf Club. He knows what makes a golf experience run smoothly, from the first tee time to the last putt. Nathan comes at it as a player and a traveller: 22 countries and counting, a start in the New Zealand Open as an amateur, and a career in advertising spent understanding what makes people tick.

What we share is a passion for golf and people, and a love of New Zealand and everything it has to offer. With world-class courses alongside plenty of hidden gems, New Zealand is far more than just a golfing destination. From spectacular scenery and world-renowned food and wine to almost as many action and adventure opportunities as we have sheep, there is something here for every traveller.

We’d both long wanted to show visitors the very best of New Zealand—on and off the course. Southern Links Golf is the result: tours planned by two mates who have spent a lifetime playing, running and loving golf in this country, and who can’t wait to share it with you.

Home golf course?
Pukekohe Golf Club
Hole in ones?
Zero—but I’m convinced one is coming! I’ve plugged beside the hole, spun one back into the pin and watched it ricochet away, and rolled one up to the lip.
Favourite New Zealand golf courses?
I have two: Tara Iti for its spectacular course and views, and Wairakei—an oldie but a goodie, always in great condition and now set within a wildlife sanctuary.
Courses you’d love to play one day?
That’s a tough one: The Old Course at St Andrews, Pebble Beach and Augusta National.
Favourite golfing moments?
Ticking off a bucket-list item by playing in the New Zealand Open as an amateur—and being paired with surfing legend Kelly Slater on the Saturday.
Another highlight was a golf day at Kauri Cliffs in January 2006 with Michael Campbell, shortly after his 2005 U.S. Open win at Pinehurst. We even had a photo with him holding the U.S. Open trophy.
What do you do when you’re not playing golf?
Spending time with my family. I run an advertising agency, enjoy seeing the world, watching sport and love getting outdoors to hunt and fish.

Te Puke Golf Club
Hole in ones?
One—during a practice round for a tournament. I was first on the course at 7am and holed it on the 4th at Tauranga Golf Club. I sat on the tee waiting for someone to come along and watch me pull the ball out of the hole… no one came.
Favourite New Zealand golf courses?
I have two: Te Arai Links and Jack’s Point.
Courses you’d love to play one day?
The Old Course at St Andrews.
Favourite golfing moments?
Playing a round with my two older brothers and my nephew. They’d never seen me play golf before, and they enjoyed every moment.
What do you do when you’re not playing golf?
Anything golf related! Through MiGolf Systems I do drone photography, websites and digital marketing for New Zealand golf clubs. I also love helping clubs run their tournaments and events, and creating social media content—especially when it’s about golf.
